Why do we change our bodies?

Effects of the Media

It would be quite obvious that the media has a huge effect on the depiction of the ideal body shape. From the media, people are usually given the impression that men have tone muscular in order to look beautiful. The media also portrays the ideal woman to be skinny and light-skinned. The media uses famous actors, musical artists, models, and athletes and portrays them as being “perfect”. Advertising for products with these people usually cause many people to buy the product, so these people influence others very well. Many smaller countries like some of the Asian island countries and Caribbean countries are heavily influenced by the preferences of bigger countries like the US, UK, France, China, or Japan.

Peer Pressure

Peer pressure plays a big factor in why people choose to change their body shapes. People would obviously want to stick in with a group of people. People love to be the same as their friends. They will most likely try to copy their body shape. For example, men would try to pressure each other to get bigger muscles.

Signs of Health

Certain body shapes can serve as a signal to show how healthy someone is. Different body shapes can favor a certain value of BMI(Body Mass Index) and depending on the value, (too high or too low) it can show whether or not the subject is healthy. According to scientific studies women with more curves are seen as more fertile and have an easier time through pregnancy and may also result in a healthier child. It is because of this that men are thought to be attracted to curves.
